Kasur is ranked among the nine districts with lowest literacy rate in Punjab. It is ranked 25 out of 34 districts in the province in terms of literacy rate. The table below compares literacy rates in District Kasur with those in Punjab:

   Student Teachers Ratio

Though the overall student-teacher ratio in District Kasur looks good, yet there are significant internal variations, as observed by CDSP planners through school visits in different union councils. Also when compared to 1998, the student-teacher ratio has shown a steady decline. In other words, classes are getting larger (though at present the strengths are generally acceptable), but the continuing trend may adversely affect the already low standard of education.

The student-teacher ratios shown in the table below are deceptive. In fact, there is a critical shortage of teachers in many schools. According to District Education Department, 74 primary and 2 middle schools for girls have been reduced to the status of single-teacher schools, while 58 girls primary schools and one middle school are non-functional due to non-availability of teachers. Many parents therefore are reluctant to send their children to school, particularly girls, due to shortage of teachers and high absenteeism.
